In BGP terms, the bits representing the network identifier are the "prefix" of the entire address, hence the "network" is the "prefix." WebTo block transmission to any IP address that starts with 123, you would use a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0 (a.k.a. a slash 8). On the other end of the scale, to block access to this website (its public IP address is 216.92.136.14) you would use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255 (a.k.a. a slash 32).
